A Letter from the Director
I am not going to lie to you – If you told me that my first ever “solo” production was
going to be Beetlejuice Jr., I may have laughed in your face. I’d seen the movie
before, and to be honest, I was not a fan. Beetlejuice is… not cute. He’s only in
about 12 minutes of the entire movie and I feel like you could have a pretty solid
Tim Burton-y haunted house story without him. And don’t even get me started on
Delia….
But I always like to try things at least twice!
So when I read the script for the musical production, I was, well, relieved that
Beetlejuice (and Delia) were written to be such lovable characters. After a deeper
dive into all of these characters and their relationships, they all share one common
theme – the desire to be together. As family, as partners, as friends; everyone is
searching for love, community, and a desire to be seen.
When I teach theater, one of the things that I always stress is that the word
“ensemble” is French for “together”. In order to create effective theater, working
together is essential. This young cast and crew has worked hard not only to tackle
demanding choreography, challenging vocalities, and eccentric acting, they have
done it in a way that shows both ownership of their craft and the ability to work
together to create meaningful art.
I am so proud of this cast and their production of Beetlejuice Jr. I know that you will
enjoy it as much as I now do!
