In 2021, as we emerged from the pandemic closure, Showtimers made a commitment to diversify our theatre and add more faces to the theatre, both on an off the stage. After some dialogue, we realized the best way to do this was to expand our educational opportunities. As a community theatre, Showtimers does not hire artists from all over the country. We rely on the talent and drive of the people in our own area, many of whom loved theatre, but lacked confidence or training to take on a bigger role. This is how the Outreach, Education, and Inclusion Committee was born. We began with some smaller classes about overcoming audition nerves, stage makeup, and diversity in theatre before creating one of our most ambitious workshops: The New Director Workshop. It was designed to be a one day workshop that led to a Showcase performance of a 10-minute play. It was a huge success in 2024 and 2025, but we had bigger ambitions. Everyone wants to be a director and helm a production, but we needed to fill an equally important, often discussed, but rarely seen role. We needed Stage Managers. We decided to give them an annual workshop of their own and integrate them into the Showcase to work with our New Directors. That is how the Emerging Artists Showcase was born. The committee has no plans on stopping here. We would love to offer more workshops, add more elements to the Showcase, and create an educational season to coincide with our performance season. Your donations today get us one step closer to achieving these goals. If you are interested in learning more or getting involved, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok at ShowtimersRKE. We would love for you to become a member of the Showtimers Community!
By utilizing our virtual playbill, you are helping the theatre (and the environment) in so many ways. The money we save on printing allows us to improve the quality of our shows, implement more educational workshops, and support our mission of creating theatre for and by the Roanoke community!
